What Have I Become?

There’s life changers that are really obvious and turn your entire life on its ear (like the day I came home with twins), and then there are the subtle changes that you don’t really notice until you have some reason to look back. At that point it sometimes makes you wonder “Who am I?” The other day I was texting with a friend and we were discussing work, jobs, next steps and the path that got us there. We've been friends since we were about 15, moved to the city around the same time, spent our 20s putting in 50+ hours a week at the office, trying to establish ourselves in careers, and spent weekends bar hopping, drinking too much and making some questionable decisions. Eventually we started spending weekends in, got married (me, not him), moved, got new jobs, kept working a million hours a week (does that stop?), had twins (me again) and once in a while we manage to not have meetings on the same day and we meet for lunch. Closet vomit. I seriously need to get this under contr...

You Try Driving in Platforms

Ever since I was young I've had a thing for fast cars and high heels. I always dreamed of driving a stick shift car in a pair of stiletto heels simply because there's something hot about it Barbie drives in heels and a bikini without bending her arms.  As it turns out I don't drive a sports car or a stick shift car (I never learned how), and while I drive in heels all the time, every so often I am reminded how hard it is to drive in platforms.  Cher Horowitz summed it up in Clueless while driving on the wrong side of the road, "You try driving in platforms." Yeah Josh, stop being a jackass and give her some credit for driving in platforms. All women should get more credit when it comes to this.  Because they make you taller you have to move the seat back, making you hold your arms straight out and drive like 1980s Barbie.  You can't see how high these are, but trust me, they're like stilts.  Then there's the fact that you c...

Wearing Barbie's Shoes

People send me shoe things all the time. Pictures, links, art, and most recently, jewelry. I am obsessed with this necklace Yep shoe jewelry. And the best part  - the jewelry is made of Barbie shoes. And I love Barbie. The artist's name is Sara Gallo , and she makes necklaces, earrings and bracelets from doll shoes. And it's amazing. Sara Gallo doesn't just string a couple pairs of plastic shoes onto a piece of jewelry wire, she turns them into wearable art. She twists and turns the shoes into intricate designs, adding jeweled and beaded accents and creating really unique jewelry. With these shoes aren't just for your feet.  Necklaces contain up to 500 tiny little doll shoes, and they come in a full rainbow of colors, and all different style of heels. Pointed toes, open toe sandals, heels with little bows on them, strappy sandals. It's like being able to wear Barbie's shoe closet. Of course the other jewelry by Sara Gallo is fantastic and ar...

Velcro is for dummies

A few weeks ago I was asked by a friend when the appropriate time in life to stop wearing Velcro shoes is. I'm pretty sure the correct answer is, "When you were five." Do they even make Velcro shoes for people who have gone through puberty? Well, apparently they do, and there she was, face to face with a Velcro shoe wearing, suit clad adult on the Orange Line. I missed the wonder that was Velcro. As a child of the 1980s one automatically assumes that I had Velcro shoes. Those wonderful shoes that go on and off with such ease. No stopping to bother with tying laces that would come undone. No broken laces or being tripped over because you knelt down to tie your shoe in the middle of a kickball game. No untied laces that are soaked from being dragged through puddles because you didn't want to stop and tie them (probably because of that asshole kid who can't see where he's going and trips over you). These shoes are for children...and idiots. Then again,...

Doll Parts

When I was a kid I loved Barbie. Big surprise, right? The girl obsessed with fashion and heels loves the doll who has more clothes than anyone and feet that are eternally ready for skyscraper heels.  As I grew older I didn't really grow out of Barbie and much as I grew up with her. She can do anything. Astronaut, president, teacher, rock star, and finally (in the form of the Mad Men dolls ) they release Marketing Barbie. To which all of my friends respond, "I thought you already were Marketing Barbie." I can only dream, and they mock me.  My personal collection of Barbie dolls is actually lacking, despite my love of the doll. I occasionally stalk the Barbie Collector website and make mental notes of dolls I want, and may never obtain, and continue to envy Barbie's fashion and her relationship with designers such as Bob Mackie , Chanel , Jonathan Adler (even her furniture is designer) and now, Christian Louboutin . Never have I wanted to transform into Barbie...
