Cat in Heels

Gladiator sandals are still in style, and I am back to traveling for work. This means that I get to see all the fashion atrocities that people across the country (or world depending on the airport terminal) commit, including that of gladiator sandals. I am quickly coming to the conclusion that you should take a styling class before wearing them. Seriously...WTF? Last week I sat at Midway Airport in Chicago for an extra two hours while my flight was delayed because of the weather, previously delayed planes, or some kind of star alignment. (You never do know about those things).  In an effort to not think about the fact that I just walked away from my three month old babies for three days, I decided to instead focus on people watching (and talking in one unfortunate case when I got trapped listening to a lady tell me all about her delays and how her adult kids travel). I travel for work, and it always involves airports. The walking, security lines, finding cabs, calling cars, and running around hotels and offices kind of traveling. I promise you it is not glamorous and I do not get to see the sights. I get to see airports and hotels and office buildings. Board plane and repeat. With all the traveling I do I was recently asked what is my minimum heel height for traveling. I'm not sure I have a minimum heel height for traveling, or even a maximum, but I do have certain heels that are better for racing through airports, towing luggage, taking off and putting on in security lines, and the various other nonsense I put my heels through in an average trip. I hate airport security. Not only is it inconvenient, and you have to take your shoes off, but I'm terrified of being searched. Which, given my frequent traveling and carry on luggage, periodically happens.  The suspicious bags and coat.  Today I get to thank LaGuardia for running my giant, hot pink bag through the x-ray machine so many times I think it may have cancer, and unpacking my carry on twice. Because the first time they weren't satisfied that my makeup bag was the offending object. Convinced there was still something hidden in the one compartment carry-on, they pulled out blazers, shoes, knee highs, panties, hair brushes and shoes twice. Of course this attracts attention, because everyone wants to know what kind of contraband the girl in the ruffled designer trench coat with a giant ruffled purse is carrying in her enormous, loud, pink bag. Airport security is a pain in the ass. It doesn't matter which airport, what city, it remains the same. Slow, stupid and full of people moving through man-made corralls so we can be x-rayed, scanned and patted down in the name of safety. The funny thing is though, that with a few exceptions I'm pretty sure the reason it's so slow is all because of shoes. If this guy wore slip ons he'd be sipping coffee at the gate now. We all need to take off our shoes at airports and we know this by now. It's not a surprise. A few years ago some nutter tried to blow up his shoe, and the plane, and now we all get our shoes x-rayed. So why can't people plan for this? Every time security is backed up (which is all the time) it's all because of people and their damn shoes. Ties, buckles, boots, more ties.
