Wellrox -Substance and Comfort

I make fun of stuff all the time. Some say it’s because I’m a cynic, some say it’s because I’m a bitch. I personally think I’m a realist, and I really don’t look at it as making fun of things, so much as simply telling people what I think. Wellrox Making fun of something would imply I’m being mean for sport, or being funny, neither of which are really things I do. A few months ago I wrote a post all about these really awful sandals called Wellrox, which look kind of like Birkenstocks, but they have thong things that go between all your toes. So if Cuthulu and Birkenstock had a sandal baby and put a flower on it, then it would be these sandals.  Of course I overlooked all the important things about how they’re good for your feet, and correct your gait and blah, blah, blah, and I focused on the aesthetics (or lack thereof). You can imagine how floored I was when a Wellrox representative reached out to me and said they wanted me to try their sandals, and they were pre...

A Cut Above

Trends come and go, and sometimes there’s that trend that creeps in all slow and quiet, and before long it’s a standard wardrobe staple. Enter the laser cut detail on shoes. Sam Edelman sandals get it right. These delicate designs crept into stores en mass this spring, and have managed to just quietly stick around. There were few declarations of this as a trend, or the “must have” shoe of the summer, but they were there. Now with summer sliding out (yes, it’s almost back to school time), laser cut detail is seamless sliding into fall with nary a whisper. Kind of like nude shoes just showed up one day and never quite went away. The great thing about laser cut details is they come on every kind of shoe, and in every style and color imaginable. If you want a pump, kitten heel, boot, oxford, flat (pointy and ballet)…they’re all available at your fingertips (assuming you shop online as much as I do). BCBGMaxAzria heels with studs.  The other interesting...

The Hybrid Heel

Mules are part pump, part clog, part slipper, and all the rage again. Last popular in the 1980's this hybrid heel has managed to sashay back into the fashion limelight and will be popping up all over again soon. Loving these Vivenne Westwood mules with a bow. The mule seems to be the distant, and infinitely more wearable cousin to the chopine. Characterized by its lack of back and high heel, it's a shoe that can either be so wrong, or so right, and it's all in how you wear them. Mules are not meant to be paired with any old thing. Best paired with cropped pants, skirts or dresses, it's the perfect summer shoe. The closed toe version is especially nice if you're between pedicures. Wearing these with pants can work, but a pant tends to hide the open back and the fact that it is a mule, and can create the awkward problem of getting your pant hem pulled under your heel and into your shoe. Mules are hard enough to walk in without pulling your pants into them. ...

Canceling Silver

A couple days ago I got a shipping confirmation on a pair of sandals I ordered. Yeah! New shoes. They were silver sandals with a wooden heel from Qupid . Very last season, but I figured they were on super sale and I needed something to replace my silver sandals, which probably should have been disposed of last summer. Then yesterday I got another email: These are not my new silver sandals. I'm contacting you with regards to your recent order number XXXX. Unfortunately the Saydie Silver shoes you purchased were out of stock when our warehouse tried to ship them to you and we will not be restocking them. Unfortunately this means that we are not going to be able to fulfill this part of your order. I have cancelled this part of your order and requested a refund be issued to your card. Please allow 5-7 business days for this to clear. Our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused. Kindest regards, Bridget Thanks Bridget. So if you're canceling my order, what t...

Sandals, mandals and acceptable footwear

Men get kind of the short end of the stick with shoes. They need only a few colors, have a few style choices, and according to men, none of them are comfortable. At least not if they're also good looking, and guys can't be uncomfortable in the name of fashion like ladies.  WTF is this? The only shoes men don't bitch about is gym shoes (not OK for everyday wear) and sandals, which show off their gnarled, hairy, generally unpedicured feet. I've never been able to make a solid decision on how I feel about men wearing sandals. Commonly known as "mandals." Sometimes it seems OK, and other times it's really not. Maybe it's dependant on the type of mandals being worn. Actually, to be honest I've never seen a pair of mandals I like. But for some reason they don't offend me. At least not all the time. When I see them in stores or on men's feet they range in reaction from, "I'm gonna puke" to "I guess those aren't aw...

F*%k these shoes

I have a potty mouth. Shocking right? Yeah. And if you've ever read anything I wrote then you know that I use "colorful" language. And if you actually know me personally, well then, you know I swear like a trucker. And if you read this, then you're probably not offended. A few months ago a friend sent me a picture of some peep toe boots that literally said, "Fuck you" on them. I of course had to find them. As it happens I randomly came upon them one day when a designer I follow (and love) by the name of Massimo Dogana posted them. And they were his design, which I somehow missed. Never mind all the colorful boots and beautiful textures of his other shoes. The amazing hardware embellishments and wacky print combinations, one Google search of his name and the first page of shoes that comes up are images of the various designs the "Fuck You" shoe comes in. (The second picture is an amazing pair of metallic sandals with jewel encrusted platfo...

Changing seasons and forgotten sandals

Chicago has finally started to decide to act like spring, and assuming it ever stops raining at random intervals, it's going to be sandal season soon. Changing seasons means that I break open the blue bin of forgotten shoes and rediscover all the shoes that I didn't take out last year, the shoes I forgot I owned, don't like and don't know why I own, and everything in between. Some of the forgotten shoes Last night I got a sudden burst of energy and curiosity, coupled with the annoyance of not being able to get through my closet, and I busted open the blue bin to put away the boots and break out the sandals. And I'm pretty sure that I didn't go through this thing in like two years, because there were shoes in there I totally forgot I owned. Zebra kitten heel sandals by Kenneth Cole , silk dragon print heels from Aldo , Prada mules, another pair of Kenneth Cole sandals, red sandals, black Nine West sandals, my beloved Bakers wedges that go with everyt...

New old stuff

This weekend I went shopping in my own closet. Convinced that I had sandals that were a little more 1st birthday party friendly than something with a platform, I started digging through the blue bin. The blue bin is my answer to keeping shoe boxes. It's basically a giant shoe box that I rotate shoes through on a seasonal basis. Or at least that's the theory. In actuality it ends up being stuff I don't wear a lot, shoes I forgot about, and boots that are big and have laces that get tangled in everything and don't fit anywhere. Strappy black sandals; I forgot about you. Chinese print sandals: I love you, but do remember you scrape my foot and only go with a few outfits. Zebra print Kenneth Cole ! I totally forgot about your existence. Let's be friends again. Black satin sandals with rhinestones and a ribbon tie; you don't go with anything.  Doc Martens that have been in hiding since the '90s, buckle patent leather boots that I bought after getting int...

BBQ Shoes

I attended a Memorial Day barbecue this weekend, and as usual obsessed over what to wear. It was like 3,000 degrees in Chicago that day, and summer clothes, let alone casual clothes are not my strong suit. I finally settle on a plaid halter sundress and a pair of black patent sandals I picked up in Las Vegas. Sundress, sandals. Seems pretty casual to me. So imagine my surprise when I walked in and someone looked at me and asked, "Do you ever not dress up?" Ummm....yeah. Now. I'm not dressed up. There's no sequins, no feathers, nothing is tight, inappropriate, or paired with a suit jacket.I'm wearing sandals. Sure, they're super cute, have a platform wedge, and didn't come out of the flip flop discount bin at Old Navy, but they're hardly fit for the office, let alone a night at the opera. Apparently in some worlds any dress is dressed up. At least I have my also over dressed fiance there with me, rocking his own inappropriate BBQ shoes and a but...
